Bergamot Essential oil is produced by the cells inside the skin of the Bergamot fruit. It’s aromatherapy widely used for reducing cholesterol, anxiety & stress, blood pressure, and pain. It’s origins in Southeast Asia but is now grown in many parts of the world. It is also known as a cosmetics flavoring agent, and the various health care purposes, it is used for.

What is Bergamot Essential Oil?

Bergamot oil is extracted from the skin of the Bergamot fruit by using peelers that scrape the skin under running water to create a mixture which is then channeled into centrifuges to separate it from the water.

The aroma of the oil is similar to orange, with a hint of floral characteristics. Bergamot oil is used to flavor Earl Grey tea, so drinkers of this tea may be familiar with the aroma.

Anxiety and pain-reducing effects of bergamot essential oil have been reported in experiments conducted on animals. This is due to an increase in extracellular aspartate, glycine, and taurine in the Central Nervous System. Reduced corticosterone response to acute stress is noticed upon inhaling bergamot oil. Naloxone, a medication used to cancel out the effects of opioids prevents the pain-reducing effects of bergamot oil. Another study revealed that bergamot oil reduces anxiety and induces a relaxing effect on rats (3).

Animal studies have shown that bergamot essential oil reduces the effect of coronary arterial spasms and cardiac arrhythmias.   • Applying the oil to the skin directly may have phototoxic effects. The active compound in the oil, bergapten, is phototoxic. When exposed to ultraviolet light, an individual may notice redness in the affected area. For this reason, one should not expose themselves to direct sunlight until the oil has been absorbed completely. Prolonged exposure to sunlight may cause bergamot oil to turn poisonous. Thus, it should be stored in a dark bottle, and kept in a cool, dark place.

  • Bergamot oil should be heavily diluted with water or some other carrier, or else it causes skin irritation. It may cause blisters, scabs, redness of the skin, and pigmentation changes.

  • Excess consumption of bergamot oil may lead to a decrease in potassium levels in the body. This could lead to muscle cramps and twitching. Studies have shown that subjects who consumed a lot of Earl Grey tea at a time suffered from muscle discomfort.
