Organic food is produced and farmed differently than conventional foods. It’s mainly GMOs free and grown without any man-made fertilizers, herbicides & pesticides. In livestock, organic farming doesn’t allow any feed additives, growth hormones & antibiotics. So it can be said that organic food contains all nutritious substances than any other regular foods.

What is organic food?

The word “organic” refers to the standards of farming product that must be grown and processed without the use of synthetic chemicals, such as prohibited pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, and does not contain bioengineered genes (GMOs)

Additionally, Organic livestock such as meat, eggs, and dairy products must be raised in living conditions accommodating their natural behaviors (such as the ability to graze on pasture) and fed organic feed. They may not be given antibiotics, growth hormones, or any animal by-products.

So we can come to the point, the food that is organically grown and processed is to be called organic food.

How to identify organic food from the market?

Every country has its own authority to maintain and certified the standard of organic food. In the USA it certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). It means that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has certified that the food contains no chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, hormones, drugs, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

To Identify the organic food while you shopping; you must find the “organic seal” on it that provided by USDA.

Certified Organic Food by USDA
  • If a label has the organic seal and says “100% organic”, so all ingredients are organic whether it can be single or multi ingredient food. These products must have a USDA seal.
  • If a product made with multi-ingredient food and labeled “organic” then its ingredients will be 95% organic. These products may have a USDA seal.
  • If a product made with multi-ingredient food and labeled “made with organic” It made at least 70% certified organic ingredients. These products may not carry a USDA seal.

Is natural food & organic food the same?

The term “Organic” & “Natural” is not the same standard. Natural labeled food is mostly produced without using any synthetic ingredients but not maintain all the organic farm practices. In this case, all the organic food can be said natural food, but natural food can’t be said organic food.

Health Benefits of Organic Food?

Organic Food has several versatile benefits for health. Some of them are mentioned below:

Health benefits at a glance:

  • Organic food is highly nutritious and good source of vitamin C, micronutrients and antioxydant.

  • It’s often fresher and free of preservative chemichals.

  • Organic produce contains fewer pesticides.

  • Organic farming tends to be better for the environment.

  • Organically raised livestock are not produced with antibiotics, hormones, and feed additives. So it’s safer for health.

  • Organic meat and milk can be richer in certain nutrients.

  • It is GMO-free.

  • It reduces joint & muscle discomfort.

  • It is good for digestion.

  • It increases immunity against organisms.

List of the reasons why should eat organic food?

Organic food has significant number of good benefits for our health and for the environments equally. Here we listed some of the beneficial things of organic food that we can get by consuming it.

1. Organic food rich in nutrients:

All the major vitamins such as vitamin C, vitamin B, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, and most of the essential minerals like iron, magnesium, and phosphorus are found in significant amounts in organically produced products.

So organically grown fruits, vegetables, essential oils, grains, legumes, dairy products, and eggs are more nutritious when compared to conventionally grown products.

2. It may contain higher antioxidants:

The great source of higher antioxidant is vitamin C vitamin E, carotenoids, and flavanols. On the other hand organically grown food is a rich significant amount of vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene. So organic food contains a sufficient level of antioxidants that control the formation of free redials in our body.

Recently, a six years research was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry that organic onions contain about a 20% higher antioxidant content than conventionally grown onions.

3. It’s free of synthetic fertilizers:

Nowadays, all conventional food is grown by using synthetic fertilizer and chemicals. Even for the purpose of food preservation in cold storage, people use many types of chemicals that are very harmful to health.

On the other hand, Organically grown food doesn’t use any artificial fertilizers. The basic rule of organic farming was designed to allow natural substances and prohibit synthetic fertilizers. Although, The National Organic Standard Board does allow some synthetic substances to be used.

4. It’s free of toxic metals and metalloids:

Organically grown food contains a low level of toxic metals and metalloids such as cadmium, lead, arsenic, and mercury. If these metals and metalloids consumed more of their safe level then a harmful effect indicates on the human body.

A study indicated that consuming these metals and metalloids as synthetic food additives cause oral, skin, gastrointestinal diseases.

5. Organic food is free of pesticides:

Pesticides are chemicals used to control crops in the land and storage foods. There are many kinds of pesticides such as Insecticides, Herbicides, Fungicides, and Rodenticides, etc. But pesticides are not used in the cultivation of organically produced food.

On the other hand synthetic fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides are widely used in conventional food. All these chemicals are harmful to our health.

Because of the harmful effects on humans and the environment most of the pesticides are restricted to use in agriculture. Their use in agriculture is the cause of some fatal diseases including cancer, damaged immune, and nervous system. infertility etc.

A study was published in the journal Pediatrics by scientists from the University of Montreal and Harvard University. They discovered that exposure to organophosphate pesticides may be associated with an increased risk of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. This study focused on 1,139 children from the US Population.

Research published by Liza Oates, Ph.D., and a team at RMIT University, that consumption of an organic diet for one week significantly reduced organophosphate (OP) pesticide exposure in adults. The research found that a 90% reduction in pesticide levels detected in urine.

A study found that the risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) among children if women exposed to organochlorine pesticides in their environment during pregnancy.

6. Organic food is free of GMOs:

GMO food means genetically modified using the method of genetic engineering. But organic food is free from any genetic modification. The purpose of GMOs can be changed size, color, test, yield time, etc. Even it changed the internal composition of the essential contents of the food. That we don’t know safe for health. So if you want to safe from any harmful effects of GMOs then start to eat organic food.

7. It’s free of antibiotics & synthetic hormones:

Farmed produced livestock(dairy product, meats, and eggs) which are not maintained organic farm roles is to be harmful to our health in a long run. Because they used to use antibiotics, growth hormone, and many other medicines on a daily basis so that they gain weight faster or produce more milk.

In most cases, the used drugs transform into the human body from the animals as we eat non-organic livestock. For this, our body loses the power of resistance against many viruses and bacterias. It also causes many chronic diseases like cancer, heart and kidney failure, etc.

On the other hand, Organically farmed produce products that are safe in many ways. Because they are not using any growth hormone and antibiotics. Organically grown livestock are kept in plenty of space so that they graze naturally on organic pasture.

8. Enhances energy & immune system:

Organic food contains the proper amount of constituents. It’s grown up without any synthetic fertilizer, pesticides, and other chemicals. So it has not any side effect on our health. It contains a good amount of nutrition and minerals so that it increases our energy and develop our immune system.

9. Good for environmental safety:

Organic food farms are great assets for our environment. It helps our ecosystem to work properly. Because organic food farms are not used polluting substances such as pesticides, fungicide, synthetic fertilizer, and many other chemicals. These pollutants ruin soil structure, mix with water toxify it, and cause air pollution. So we should encourage more and more to produce organic food to keep our environment healthy, fresh, and safe.

10. Organic food is seasonal:

Organic food is produced by maintaining its natural growing season. It also maintains a crop rotation period so that soil and other natural elements will be found sufficiently. So seasonal food are will be more nutritious and tasty than non-seasonal food.

11. Safer for farmers & their neighbors:

Organically certified farms are safe for farmers and it’s neighbor in many ways. Organic food farms not used chemicals and pesticides. We know this chemical is caused for skin disease, eye disease, allergy, eczema, and nerve disease. So organic food farms are the best for farmers and their’s neighbor’s health and wellness.

List of foods carry the most pesticides:

As we know conventionally produced food contains pesticides. Although, not all conventionally grown foods contain the same amounts of pesticides.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) segmented conventionally produced foods into three lists by pesticide residue testing data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. They come up with rankings for 48 popular fresh produce items in the United States.

1. The first 12 are what EWG refers to as “The Dirty Dozen” the highest pesticide-contamination foods.
2. The middle 21 are what EWG refers to as “The Middle 21” medium pesticide-contaminated foods.

Organic Farm vs. Non-Organic Farm

Organic Food Farm Practices Conventional Food Farm Practices
Food Produced by improving soil quality with natural fertilizers such as green manure(plant waste left on fields), livestock manure or compost. Food Produced with synthetic or chemical fertilizers.
Harmful pests are controlled using natural methods (birds, insects, traps) and naturally-derived pesticides. Pests are controlled with chemical pesticides
No fungiside are used to controle for plant diseases Synthetic fungicide are used for cntrole plant diseases
Weeds are controlled naturally (crop rotation, hand weeding, mulching, and tilling) or with organic-approved herbicides. Weeds are controlled with chemical herbicides.
No bioengineered genes (GMOs) used to improve disease or pest resistance or to improve crop yields. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are use to used for controle diseases or pest resistance or to improve crop yields time.
Livestock are given all organic, hormone- and GMO-free feed. Livestock are given growth hormones for faster growth, as well as non-organic, GMO feed.
Disease is prevented with natural methods such as clean housing, rotational grazing, and healthy diet. Antibiotics and medications are used to prevent livestock disease.
Vaccinations followed for prevent diseases. Vaccinations not followed properlly.
Livestock must have healthy living conditions and access to the outdoors. Livestock may not have access to the outdoors.

In Conclusion:

It’s high time, we should raise concern & awareness against chemical contamination in food. Because it’s harmful impact significantly increasing day by day. So we should take preventive action against this kind of conventional food. At the same time, we should have to start eating organic food and promote organic farming much as possible.
